Memorial Day arrives with flowers blooming, grills smoking, beach bum lounging and the unofficial start of summer. Underneath the hotdogs, burgers, sunscreen and parades is one of the most emotional holidays in American history. The first Memorial Day occured on May 30th 1868 and was called "Decoration Day". At the time, families still struggling to process the loss of family members from America's deadliest war, the Civil War. People were encouraged to decorate soldiers' graves with flags, flowers and handwritten notes. Main organizer, General John A. Logan, chose this date to coincide when flowers would bloom. The result, cemeteries went from gray grief stricken places to uplifting epicenters of color and rememberance. Many American towns in the 1960's claim to be the official birthplace of the first official Memorial Day. We like that! Sometimes good ideas are just too great to come from a single spot! Now in my opinion today isn't a day for sadness. It is a day to remember and respect . Many people we remember today paid the ultimate price while fighting for a leader that they might not have voted for. It's essential to remember that these men and women didn't hesitate and gave all despite having voting for the other guy and having different beliefs. If you notice my outfit in the video or episode art you will notice I am casual. I normally dress in a matching outfit but that isn't the right thing to day on a day like today. The valor all belongs to those who gave all! Remember today is a day to remember, not a day to be sad. Be happy but be sure to think of all those people who those looking down on you while you crush your 7th corn on the cob!
